In order to maintain the level of services that BDDA provide to the whole community, we need help.
Fundraising
As a totally independent charity, we need help to raise the funds that run the organisation from day-to-day, that provide the services to our disabled members and vitally, that ensure the disabled community of Barrow-in-Furness and the surrounding district has an influence on local issues of concern, not just to our members but for the benefit of all disabled members of society. There are a number of ways of helping us fund the BDDA’s work and these are included in the sections below.
Volunteering
The gift of time is equally welcome. Without the sterling efforts of our volunteers we would find it difficult to continue in business. We require a range of skills and abilities to keep the organisation running smoothly but the main qualification is enthusiasm. We endeavor to help our volunteers achieve their own goals but are confident that in whatever activity they are involved, all will benefit from the rewarding experience of working with BDDA.

Putting the Fun in Fundraising
BDDA has a very active fundraising group. Among the range of activities they undertake are a lot of fun and social events including, musical evenings, tombolas, coffee mornings and raffles. Our aim is to make fundraising fun.
We are fortunate to have a number of fundraising partners, great supporters of the BDDA, who generously organise events to help raise funds on our behalf. By participating in these events or supporting these organisations, you can help to support BDDA.
For more information on fundraising events, how these help us and how you can get involved, please contact Margaret Burrow or Frank Layton on 01229 432599, or using any of the other contact methods outlined at the bottom of the page.
Donations
All donations to BDDA are gratefully received. Should you wish to make a donation to the organisation, there’s a form to help you on the website, you can contact the centre or you can, of course, drop in during opening hours.
To enable us to get the most out of your donation, please consider whether you can make your donation through gift aid (details below)
How to volunteer
Volunteers provide most of our activities and services. They give their services to enable people with disabilities to live a more active and fulfilling life.
If you think you are able to spare a few hours of your time, in whatever capacity and would like to consider working as a volunteer for BDDA, please get in touch with Shirley Waters in the first instance. You can call on 01229 432599 or drop in to the centre.
Shirley will hold a very informal interview with you to see what skills you have to offer the organisation and find out what skills and experience you would like to obtain through your work with us.

We encourage all donations, where possible, to be made as gift aid.
Here’s how it works
Gift aid does not cost the donor a single penny and all you have to do is sign one declaration form which covers every subsequent donation. Gift aid allows BDDA to gain and additional 28p from the Inland Revenue for every £1 donated this way, so a £5 donation provides £6.40 to BDDA and £10 provides £12.80 etc.
Using gift aid to make a donation can make a big difference to BDDA’s work!
In order to qualify as gift aid the donor must pay tax at least the basic rate and to a value at least that of the value recouped by BDDA. We’ll be happy to advise you on the possibilities of using gift aid and provide you with a form in order to make your donation gift aid. Click here to get the form from the website.

Most of us, at some time or another, have thought about making a will primarily to ensure that the family is looked after. It may come as a surprise to know that although almost 70% of us give money to charity through buying raffle tickets, collections, or just simply making a donation, only about 14% remember to do this in a will and only about 50% of us make any form of will at all. Making a will is a fairly simple procedure but it is best to seek the advice of a solicitor who can draw up a will for a comparatively small fee.
Even a small amount left to a charity like BDDA can make a real difference. A legacy does not necessarily have to be an amount of cash, although this is the common form, it can be a specific item or even shares; most importantly,
such legacies are currently free from tax.
Over the years BDDA has received a number of legacies and each one has helped us with our work to provide services, advice and facilities for our members.
If you would like to know more about legacies call Remember a Charity free on 08001802080 and ask for a “Will Guide” leaflet or visit the website www.rememberacharity.org.uk
